We are delighted to announce that Elena Ostanel (Iuav of Venice) has joined the Oecumene research team at The Open University in Milton Keynes as a Visiting Fellow for the period of 2 weeks from 6-20 June 2011. She is presenting her research to the Oecumene group and will work closely with the team to develop her research and opportunities for future collaboration.
In her own words she describes her research interest as follows: 'If citizenship is an historical process that exists at any time and place, constituted by strategies of being political, the aim of this study is to delve profoundly into the construction of this historical process questioning the same notion of ‘citizenship’ in three case studies: Padova, Johannesburg and New Orleans.
Nowadays the city scatters urban life along a series of sites and circulation and cities are not consensual and harmonious. As Saskia Sassen says ‘the post-modern city conveys a new space of centrality and marginality, but at the same time it is the space for new claims’. To this extent, the research wants to lead to a revision of the common forms of representing the relationship between society and territory as well as of the form of representing urbanity.'
