The Postcolonial Museum: the Pressures of Memory and the Bodies of History

Thursday, 7 February 2013 (All day) - Friday, 8 February 2013 (All day)
Naples

Alessandra Marino speaks at the MeLA conference  on The Postcolonial Museum: the Pressures of Memory and the Bodies of History in Naples.  She will present a paper on 'Orientalism and the politics of art exhibitions'.

The paper investigates recent art exhibitions in Europe to unveil possible traces of orientalism that inform their conception and organisation. Despite the recurrence of orientalist motives in the production and rearticulation of images of self and otherness, I ask if art display can contribute to deorientalize cultural narratives dividing East and West and contest fixed identity constructions.
