Performing Gender conference

Friday, 12 April 2013 (All day) - Sunday, 14 April 2013 (All day)

Tara Atluri will be speaking at the Performing Gender conference in Belfast April 12-14, 2013.

She will present a paper titled "Reach out and Touch Someone?": Marina Abramovic, Amma, and the politics of performing the sacred.  This paper examines artist Marina Abramović piece "The artist is present" in which patrons were invited to look into the artist's eyes and Amma, the hugging mother, a female guru who hugs devotees.  This talk will question why these performances have gained world wide popularity in an internet driven era.  It will further question how the visibility and touchability of certain gendered bodies happens against the invisiblity and untouchability of others.
