Engin Isin speaks at the panel debate 'Citizens Europe – a promise or an illusion?' – How to deal with growing euro scepticism and perceived 'democratic deficit' of the European Union - Challenges for the civil society

Speakers: Engin Isin, UK, Conny Reuter, SOLIDAR, Freddy Thielemans, ex-mayor of Brussels

Moderated by Cecile le Clercq, Europe for Citizens programme

2014 will be the year of elections to the European parliament. In the atmosphere of growing scepticism towards the European Union and 're-nationalisation' of the European space how can civil society organisations, local and municipal authorities bring new spirit of citizens Europe based on civic participation, engagement and shared values? What should be the new vision/narrative for Europe? What are the obstacles towards the 'federation of nation states'? How can EU institutions and civil society work together to make this vision a reality?

The second panel debate should also draw on conclusions from the final event of the European Year of Citizens held in Vilnius at the end of 2013.
